Field calibration of a low-cost sensors network to assess traffic-related air pollution along the Brenner highway

This paper presents the results of a field campaign aiming at testing ability network low-cost electrochemical sensors to measure nitrogen dioxide concentration levels alongside one major Italian highway arteries. The double on-field calibration, allowing for investigating performance under broad range weather conditions, are first shown and discussed. Different regression models tested their is widely assessed. Then, measurements calibrated analyzed during year-long campaign, against reference air quality stations paying particular attention different statistical indices. Results show satisfactory sensors, highlighting suitability complement from standard stations, reach wider spatial coverage monitor pollutant concentrations in critical situations, when usually not feasible. Moreover, dataset available allows extensively investigate highway, pointing out strict relationship between patterns meteorological phenomena typical Alpine valleys, such as daily-periodic thermally-driven wind systems. • Deployment test NO 2 Brenner highway.
